Madeirense Shipwreck

Porto Santo, Northeast
4.8(612)

The Madeirense was deliberately scuttled to create one of the Atlantic's most accessible large wrecks. Sitting upright at 32 m, the ship is fully colonised by fireworms, anemones and schools of bream. Cargo holds and bridge are penetrable for trained divers, and the surrounding sand attracts rays and the occasional tiger shark sighting.

Highlights

  • Intact 70 m cargo vessel
  • Penetration possible for advanced divers
  • Frequent ray and barracuda sightings
  • Often paired with the nearby Corveta wreck
